A Sigh of Relief
Today I woke up feeling light
and hopeful
for what feels like the first time in four years.
The sun is out – a rare sight for a Chicago January –
but it’s not the weather I’m feeling hopeful about.
Today, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are inaugurated
as President and Vice President of the United States.
A hopeful end to the chaos of the last four years.
Every day since November 9, 2016 the majority of Americans
Have woken up in disbelief as we watched the 45th president run
our beloved country into the ground,
without as much thought as the fast-food wrapper from his lunch.
But today,
Today a family enters the White House again.
Two American families
Two families that represent what our country stands for.
Who have seen heartache and struggle but have chosen to overcome it and see the beauty that comes with starting again.
A blended family, full of love – so much love – and light,
bringing that sense of levity back to our hearts.
A family with dogs – two of them!
And then there’s the momentous, ceiling shattering part of the day.
As Kamala Harris is sworn in as the Vice President
The first female, first Black, first woman of Indian descent
I will sit watching with my six-month-old daughter on my lap
And whisper in her ear
You can do anything
As my eyes fill with proud, hopeful tears.
Today, we wake up a better America.
Not a perfect one – there is still so much work to be done – but one that is healing.
Happy Inauguration Day to every American.
